Private jet charter to Laos

Nestled between Cambodia and Vietnam, Laos is a firm favourite on the backpacking route, famous for river tubing, myriad temples and some of Asia’s most impressive waterfalls. But this captivating country is not only for adventure-seekers. Laos has some hidden gems for those in search of a touch of luxury to accompany the magnificent natural landscapes and cultural splendour. French colonial architecture can be seen in all its glory in the northern province of Luang Prabang. The Royal Palace and the colonial-era mansions that line the Mekong River are prime examples. Stay at Amantaka, a colonial masterpiece based under Mount Phousi, which offers two private villas and 24 luxury suites – 16 of which have their own private pool. This lush green mountain province is a UNESCO-listed site that is home to 33 temples, Kuang Si Waterfall and the holy Pak Ou Caves.

If you’re headed to the capital, Vientiane, stay at Settha Palace Hotel for a taste of colonial splendour. Built in the 1930s, this former colonial residence has been restored to its former glory, with charming interiors and fine French cuisine served in the Belle Epoque Brasserie. The main sites in Vientiane are Hat Luang Monument, where Buddha’s breastbone is said to lie, the Patuxai War Memorial and Talat Sao Market.

If you’re after mega-malls and designer shopping then Ventiane is not the capital for you – this city moves at a slower pace compared to its more commercially driven South-East Asian neighbours. Café culture, a leftover from the French colonial era, is a relaxing alternative way to spend the day. While away the hours sipping fresh coffee, enjoying a pastry and watching the world go by.

Vang Vieng, on the Nam Song River, is the home of tubing and watersports, which you may want to avoid if you don’t like getting wet! Another popular site is Tham Kong Lo in Phu Hin Bun National Park, a limestone cave complex with ethereal emerald pools. For culture vultures, the ruins of Wat Phu, a Khmer temple complex in Champasak Province, is another main attraction. Whilst not as magnificent as Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, it’s definitely still worth a visit if you have the time. Wildlife enthusiasts will love Bokeo Nature Reserve in the north, which is home to black-cheeked gibbons and offers guests the chance to stay in treehouses and zip-line through the park.

In addition to French and European fine dining, Laos’ traditional cuisine is another must-try. Popular traditional dishes include ‘Kaeng’, fragrant soups and stews made with coconut milk and lemongrass; ‘Larb’, spicy marinated meat or raw fish with herbs and greens; and green papaya salad – all served with the ubiquitous sticky rice.
